Gala Émergence - The 2022 Award Recipients
The 2022 edition of the Fondation Émergence highlighted individuals and communities who played a crucial role in promoting equality and recognizing the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. Here are this year's award recipients.
Laurent-McCutcheon Award: Debbie Lynch-White
This year, the Laurent-McCutcheon Award was presented to actress and singer Debbie Lynch-White for her sincere commitment and integrity. From the beginning of her career, she proudly affirmed her lesbian identity, publicly sharing her personal life and relationship in a positive way. Her authenticity and openness have helped raise public awareness of LGBTQ+ realities, making her journey an example of acceptance, inclusivity, and tolerance.
Coup de Cœur Award: Pride Advisory Organization of the Defense Team (OCFÉD)
The Coup de Cœur Award recognizes the collective commitment of the Pride Advisory Organization of the Defense Team (OCFÉD). This volunteer group supports more than 300 LGBTQ+ members within the Canadian Defense Team. Through their structural initiatives, they have significantly contributed to creating an environment of dignity and respect, improving members' well-being, and fostering a culture of inclusion.
Allies Award: Me Alice Nkom
The Janette-Bertrand Award was presented this year to Me Alice Nkom, a pioneering figure and a champion of human rights. As the first female lawyer in Cameroon, she is globally recognized for her unwavering commitment to fighting police violence and discrimination. Me Nkom also bravely defends LGBTQ+ rights in a country where homosexuality has been criminalized since 1972.
Academic Tribute Award: Michel Dorais
The Academic Tribute Award was awarded to Michel Dorais, a renowned Quebec sociologist and expert on gender and sexuality issues. As the author of numerous internationally recognized works, he has provided essential insights into LGBTQ+ communities' challenges. His rigorous research and expertise have enriched academic discussions and inspired significant progress in the field.
Engagement Award: Claude Guillet
For the first time, the Engagement Award was presented to Claude Guillet, a governor of Fondation Émergence, in recognition of his outstanding contributions and exemplary commitment. Since 2003, he has played a key role in the Foundation's mission as a behind-the-scenes artist. As a graphic designer, photographer, and mentor, he has designed the visuals for the annual awareness campaigns for the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, as well as the Foundation’s visual identity. His creativity and professionalism have helped shape a strong and lasting image for Fondation Émergence.
These recipients represent diverse yet complementary contributions to the fight for equality, inclusion, and the recognition of LGBTQ+ rights. Their individual and collective efforts serve as an inspiration to continue building a fairer and more inclusive world that respects diversity.
